CULTIVATING ANGELICA for KNF
Angelica is a relatively hardy plant that can thrive in a variety of growing conditions.
1. Climate and Location
Angelica prefers cool, temperate climates and partial shade. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but may benefit from protection during the hottest parts of the day, especially in warmer regions. It is native to regions with moist, well-drained soil, so it's essential to provide adequate moisture, especially during dry periods.
Angelica can be grown in pots if needed. While it is native to temperate zones, I have successfully grown it in the tropics and pots.
2. Soil
Angelica grows best in rich, moist soil with good drainage. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (6.0-7.0). Organic matter will help soil fertility and moisture retention.
3. Watering
Adequate moisture is essential for angelica plants, especially during the growing season. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. To retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth, mulch around the base of the plants and use Indigenous Micro-organisms (IMO).
4. Spacing
Angelica seeds or seedlings should be at least 2 feet apart to allow for adequate airflow and room for growth. The plants can grow tall and bushy, so providing enough space between plants will help prevent overcrowding.
5. Fertilization
Angelica is not a heavy feeder, so avoid excessive fertilization. Overly lush foliage can reduce essential oil content.
6. Harvesting and Pruning
Angelica leaves, stems, and roots can be harvested. Harvesting should be done judiciously to allow the plant to continue growing. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to promote airflow and prevent disease.
In Korean Natural Farming (KNF), the roots are used to make Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN). They are best collected from plants that are at least two years old.
7. Pests and Diseases
Angelica is relatively resistant to pests and diseases but may be susceptible to aphids, slugs, and powdery mildew in humid conditions. To help prevent these problems, avoid overfertilizing, maintain adequate airflow, and use KNF techniques. Be sure to provide adequate moisture, partial shade, and well-drained soil.
